Western New Guinea
Western New Guinea is the western half of the island of New Guinea, administered by Indonesia since 1963 and now divided into several Papuan provinces. Ruled by the Netherlands as part of the East Indies and, from 1949 to 1962, as Netherlands New Guinea, it passed to Indonesia after the New York Agreement and a disputed vote of selected representatives in 1969, the Act of Free Choice. A separatist movement has continued since the 1960s.
