Western Regions
The Western Regions was the Chinese name, from the Han dynasty, for the lands west of the Yumen Pass, chiefly the oasis city-states of the Tarim Basin such as Kucha, Karasahr, Khotan and Shule. Han China contested them with the Xiongnu from the 2nd century BCE and set up a Protectorate of the Western Regions in 60 BCE; the general Ban Chao reconquered them between the 70s and 90s CE.
