Zakat
Zakat is the obligatory almsgiving of Islam, one of the Five Pillars, levied as a proportion of certain kinds of wealth and distributed to the poor and other specified recipients. In Islamic states it also functioned as a tax. Each emirate collected zakat on agricultural produce and livestock, alongside jizya and kharaj, remitting a portion to Sokoto.
