Zimbabwe African People's Union

Also known as ZAPU

The Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) was a nationalist movement founded in 1961 under Joshua Nkomo to oppose white minority rule in Southern Rhodesia. Its armed wing, ZIPRA, fought the Rhodesian government from Zambia. After independence it was persecuted during the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland and merged with ZANU in 1987.
