Zotto

d. c. 591 · 6th century · Also known as Zotto of Benevento

Zotto was the first Lombard duke of Benevento, establishing himself there around 571 at the head of a Lombard war band, possibly after serving as a mercenary in Byzantine pay. He extended Lombard control over much of inland southern Italy, and his warriors are said to have sacked the abbey of Monte Cassino in the 580s. He was succeeded by Arechis I.
