Zwentibold

c. 870–900 · 9th century · Also known as Zwentibold of Lotharingia

Zwentibold was the illegitimate son of the East Frankish king Arnulf of Carinthia, who made him king of Lotharingia in 895. His rule provoked the Lotharingian nobility, led by Reginar, and after Arnulf's death he was killed in battle on the Meuse on 13 August 900. Lotharingia then passed to his half-brother Louis the Child, and Zwentibold was later venerated locally as a saint.
