Ajaigarh State

1765 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Ajaigarh

A Bundela Rajput state of Bundelkhand named after the hill fortress of Ajaigarh, a former Chandela stronghold.

Origins

Ajaigarh's rulers descended from Chhatrasal through the Panna line. Around 1765 Guman Singh received a share of the family lands with his seat at Banda. After the British took Banda, his successor Bakht Singh was granted the hill fort of Ajaigarh and its lands by sanad in the early 19th century.

Rule and society

Ajaigarh was an 11-gun salute state of the Bundelkhand Agency, ruled by a Raja, later Maharaja, over hilly country between the Ken river and the Vindhya scarp. The fort, with its medieval Chandela temples and gates, was the state's chief monument.

Decline and legacy

After independence Ajaigarh was merged into Vindhya Pradesh in 1948 and joined Madhya Pradesh in 1956; it lies in Panna district.
