Aulerci Eburovices

300 BCE – 51 BCE (approx.) · capital Mediolanum Aulercorum

Branch of the Aulerci around Évreux in Normandy who killed their own council rather than stay out of the war against Caesar.

Origins

The Eburovices were part of the Aulerci group of peoples and held the land between the Seine and the Eure, around the oppidum later called Mediolanum Aulercorum.

Rule and society

Caesar records that in 56 BCE they and the Lexovii murdered their senators, who opposed war, and joined the coalition of Viridovix of the Unelli. The episode shows that they were governed by a council of nobles.

Decline and legacy

The coalition was defeated by Quintus Titurius Sabinus in 56 BCE, and the Eburovices joined the general revolt again in 52 BCE. Under Rome Mediolanum Aulercorum became a civitas capital, the origin of Évreux.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
