Lexovii

300 BCE – 56 BCE (approx.) · capital Noviomagus Lexoviorum

Gallic people of the Pays d'Auge in Normandy, whose name survives in the town of Lisieux.

Origins

The Lexovii lived between the Seine estuary and the Orne, with a coastline on the Channel. Caesar names them among the peoples of the Atlantic seaboard.

Rule and society

Caesar records that in 56 BCE they killed their senators, who would not support war, and joined the coalition of Viridovix, showing a council of nobles similar to those of their neighbours.

Decline and legacy

Defeated by Quintus Titurius Sabinus in 56 BCE, they also sent troops to Alesia in 52 BCE. Under Rome their chief town was Noviomagus Lexoviorum, the origin of Lisieux, later a bishopric.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
