Baluchistan States Union
Origins
In 1952 Kalat, Kharan, Makran State and Las Bela State, which had acceded to Pakistan in 1948, were combined into the Baluchistan States Union. The Khan of Kalat, Ahmad Yar Khan, became its head as Khan-e-Azam.
Rule and society
The union had a council of the rulers and a small administration based at Kalat, with Pakistan's government retaining control of defence, foreign affairs and communications. It covered a vast, thinly populated territory of pastoralists, farmers and coastal fishermen.
Decline and legacy
In 1955 the union was dissolved and merged into West Pakistan under the One Unit scheme, ending the political role of the Baloch rulers. Its lands are now part of Balochistan province.
