Las Bela State

1742 CE – 1955 CE (approx.) · capital Bela

A Baloch coastal principality south of Kalat ruled by the Jams of Las Bela, which joined Pakistan in 1948.

Origins

Around 1742 Jam Ali Khan of the Aliani branch of the Jamot tribe established a ruling house in the Las Bela plain, which lies between the Kirthar range and the Arabian Sea. The state acknowledged the overlordship of the Khanate of Kalat.

Rule and society

The Jam ruled a small, sparsely populated land of herders and farmers, with the port of Sonmiani as its outlet to the sea. Under British paramountcy it was handled through the Baluchistan Agency, and its rulers balanced between Kalat and the British. Its people spoke Lasi, Balochi and Sindhi.

Decline and legacy

Jam Ghulam Qadir Khan acceded to Pakistan in March 1948. Las Bela joined the Baluchistan States Union in 1952 and was merged into West Pakistan in 1955; it is now a district of Balochistan province.
