Bansda State

1781 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Vansda

A Solanki Rajput state in the forested hills of southern Gujarat, beside the Dangs.

Origins

The rulers of Vansda (Bansda) were Solanki Rajputs whose line claimed descent from the Chaulukya kings of Gujarat. Their small hill state emerged as a distinct principality in the 18th century and came under Maratha and then British supervision.

Rule and society

Bansda was a 9-gun salute state of the Surat Agency, later the Gujarat States Agency, governed by a Maharawal over a forested, largely Adivasi territory of Kokna, Bhil and other communities. Timber and forest produce were the main resources.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Bansda was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Its former forests are protected in the Vansda National Park in Navsari district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
