Baria State

1524 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Devgadh Baria

A Chauhan Rajput state in eastern Gujarat founded by descendants of the last Rajput rulers of Champaner after its fall to the Gujarat Sultanate.

Origins

When Mahmud Begada of the Gujarat Sultanate took Champaner and Pavagadh in 1484, the defeated Chauhan Rajput rulers' descendants withdrew into the hills to the east. By tradition they founded Devgadh Baria in 1524, and it became the capital of their state.

Rule and society

Baria was a forested, hilly state with a large Bhil population. It paid tribute to the Marathas and later came under British supervision in the Rewa Kantha Agency. Its later rulers built a palace and introduced modern administration in the early 20th century.

Decline and legacy

Baria merged into Bombay State in 1948. Its last ruler, Jaideepsinhji, later served as a minister in Gujarat. Devgadh Baria is now in Dahod district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
