Barony of Chalandritsa

1209 CE – 1429 CE (approx.) · capital Chalandritsa

Small Frankish barony in the hills south of Patras, one of the original fiefs of the Principality of Achaea.

Origins

Chalandritsa was among the baronies created in the Principality of Achaea around 1209. It was granted to Robert de la Tremouille, a knight from France, and held a small number of knight's fiefs in the hill country of Achaea south of Patras.

Rule and society

The barons owed military service to the prince and had seats in his high court. The Dramelay family later held it for much of the 13th and 14th centuries. Beyond these facts, recorded in the Chronicle of the Morea and Angevin documents, little is known of the barony's internal life.

Decline and legacy

In the final collapse of the principality, Chalandritsa was taken by the Byzantines of the Despotate of the Morea, under Constantine Palaiologos, in 1429, at the same time as the campaign that won Patras.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
