Bhajji State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Seoni

A small Rajput hill state on the Sutlej north of Shimla, ruled from Seoni, one of the Simla Hill States.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500 and links it to the house of Suket, but little is reliably known of its origins.

Rule and society

Bhajji was a small mountain state above the Sutlej, with its capital at Seoni. It was occupied by the Gurkhas of the Kingdom of Nepal in the early 19th century and restored under British protection after 1815. Its history is poorly recorded.

Decline and legacy

Bhajji merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
