Suket State

765 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sundernagar

A Sen dynasty hill state south of Mandi whose people's 1948 protest movement, the Suket Satyagraha, helped bring about the formation of Himachal Pradesh.

Origins

Tradition holds that Bir Sen, of a Sen family from Bengal, founded the state around 765, with an early capital at Pangna. Mandi State was later established by a junior branch of the same family, and the two states were frequent rivals.

Rule and society

The Rajas moved their capital several times, to Lohara and Kartarpur and finally to Banaid, renamed Sundernagar. Suket was a small agricultural state on the route between the Sutlej and Beas valleys. It came under the Sikh Empire in the early 19th century and under British protection after 1846.

Decline and legacy

In February 1948 the Suket Satyagraha, led by local Praja Mandal activists, forced Raja Lakshman Sen to cede control. Suket was merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948, and Sundernagar is now a town in Mandi district.
