Bijna State

1800 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Bijna

A tiny chiefship of the Bundelkhand Agency, one of the smallest polities recognised by the British in central India.

Origins

Bijna was recognised as a separate holding under British protection in the early 19th century, one of a number of small Bundela estates confirmed after the British gained supremacy in Bundelkhand.

Rule and society

Little is recorded of its history; it consisted of a few villages under a hereditary chief supervised by the political agent in Bundelkhand.

Decline and legacy

After independence Bijna was merged into Vindhya Pradesh with the other Bundelkhand states, and its lands were absorbed into the Indian administration by 1950.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
