Canton of Granada

1873 CE – 1873 CE · capital Granada

A short-lived federalist canton proclaimed in Granada in July 1873 and ended by General Pavía's troops in August.

Origins

On 20 July 1873 the federalists of Granada proclaimed a sovereign canton, part of the Cantonal Rebellion that swept southern and eastern Spain against the government of the Spanish First Republic.

Rule and society

A cantonal junta took over the city, organised militias and proposed radical measures, including the demolition of some old fortifications and the taxing of the wealthy. It had little time and few resources to carry them out.

Decline and legacy

After crushing the cantons of Seville and Cádiz, General Manuel Pavía's forces entered Granada on 12 August 1873, and the canton dissolved without serious resistance.
