Crown Domain of the Nguyen Dynasty
Origins
In April 1950 Bao Dai, head of the State of Vietnam, decreed that the Central Highlands and other upland areas inhabited mainly by ethnic minorities would form the Hoang trieu Cuong tho, Crown Domain, directly under the Nguyen crown rather than the ordinary government. The Nung and Tai areas of the north were also attached.
Rule and society
The domain was administered from Ban Me Thuot under a separate statute that protected highland peoples' land and customs, limited lowland Vietnamese settlement and kept French military and planter influence strong. Bao Dai used the highlands for hunting and as a personal power base, with residences at Da Lat and Ban Me Thuot.
Decline and legacy
After the Geneva Accords of 1954 and Bao Dai's deposition by Ngo Dinh Diem in 1955, the Crown Domain was abolished, and the highlands were integrated into the Republic of Vietnam, opening them to large-scale Vietnamese settlement.
