Darkoti State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Darkoti

One of the tiniest princely states in India, a Rajput chiefship of a few villages in the Shimla hills.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its origins.

Rule and society

Darkoti covered only a handful of villages east of Shimla and had a very small population and revenue. It was restored under British protection after the Anglo-Nepalese War as one of the Simla Hill States. Its history is poorly recorded.

Decline and legacy

Darkoti merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
