Dasada State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dasada

A small state of the Jhalawad district of Kathiawar, on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch, held by a Muslim chiefly family.

Origins

Dasada lay on the southern edge of the Little Rann of Kutch in the Jhalawad region of northern Kathiawar. Its rulers, a Muslim family of Malik descent, held the estate from around 1600, though its founding is known mainly from local tradition.

Rule and society

The ruler governed a dry, thinly settled territory of grazing land and cotton villages bordering the salt flats. The state paid tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda and, after 1807, came under British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency. Few further details are recorded.

Decline and legacy

Dasada merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in present Surendranagar district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
