Democratic Republic of Vietnam
Origins
During the August Revolution of 1945 the Viet Minh, a front led by the Indochinese Communist Party, seized power across much of Vietnam. On 2 September 1945 Ho Chi Minh read the declaration of independence in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, proclaiming the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
Rule and society
The DRV fought France in the First Indochina War from 1946, winning at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The Geneva Accords left it in control of the north above the 17th parallel. It built a one-party socialist state with collectivised agriculture after a harsh land reform, backed by the Soviet Union and China, and supported the southern insurgency through the Ho Chi Minh Trail against the Republic of Vietnam and the United States.
Decline and legacy
After the Paris Peace Accords of 1973 and the fall of Saigon in April 1975, the DRV merged with the Republic of South Vietnam. On 2 July 1976 the united country was proclaimed the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
