First Indochina War

1946–1954 · 20th century

The First Indochina War was fought between France and the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, after France tried to restore its rule over Indochina following the Second World War. The Viet Minh, aided from 1950 by China, defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The Geneva Accords then ended French Indochina and divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel.
