Eblani
Origins
The Eblani are known only from the Geography of Ptolemy, compiled around 150 from earlier sailors' reports. He places them on the east coast of Ireland, south of the Voluntii and north of the Cauci, roughly in the area of modern County Dublin and Meath, with a town called Eblana.
Rule and society
Nothing is recorded of their rulers, society or customs. The resemblance of Eblana to Dublin led older writers to identify the two, but most scholars now doubt the link, since Dublin's name is Irish and Ptolemy's coordinates are imprecise. Archaeology shows Roman goods reaching the east coast at sites such as Drumanagh.
Decline and legacy
The Eblani do not appear in any later source, and no Irish tradition preserves their name. Their area later fell within the territory of the Kingdom of Leinster and of the rising Uí Néill dynasties of Brega.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
