Gangpur State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sundargarh

A princely state in the far north-west of Odisha whose former territory now holds the Rourkela steel plant.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its founding.

Rule and society

Gangpur was a large, forested state with a mainly Adivasi population, including Oraon, Munda and Kharia peoples. It was tributary to Sambalpur and the Marathas and was transferred from the Chota Nagpur states to the Orissa Tributary States in 1905. Its capital was Sundargarh.

Decline and legacy

Gangpur merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and became part of Sundargarh district, where the Rourkela steel plant was built in the 1950s.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
