Helvii

300 BCE – 121 BCE (approx.) · capital Alba Helviorum

Gallic people of the Vivarais who stayed loyal to Rome in 52 BCE and from whose land Caesar crossed the snowbound Cévennes.

Origins

The Helvii lived on the right bank of the Rhône in the modern Ardèche, at the edge of the Massif Central. Their land became part of the Roman Province after 121 BCE.

Rule and society

Caesar names Gaius Valerius Caburus, who had received Roman citizenship from the governor Gaius Valerius Flaccus, an early example of a Gallic noble family adopting Roman ways. His son Gaius Valerius Donnotaurus was the leading man of the people in 52 BCE.

Decline and legacy

In 52 BCE the Helvii were attacked by the Gabali and Arverni for their loyalty, and Donnotaurus was killed in the fighting. Caesar marched through their territory and crossed the Cévennes in deep snow to strike the Arverni. Their Roman town was Alba Helviorum (Alba-la-Romaine), and the region later became the Vivarais.
