Jambughoda State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Jambughoda

A small forest state of eastern Gujarat, also called Narukot, whose woods are now a wildlife sanctuary.

Origins

Jambughoda, earlier known as Narukot, was held by a Rajput family in the forested hills near Champaner. The estate emerged around 1600, though its founding is known mainly from local tradition.

Rule and society

The ruler governed hilly country inhabited largely by Bhils and Naikdas. In the British period it was a minor state of the Rewa Kantha Agency. Few further details of its rulers are recorded.

Decline and legacy

Jambughoda was merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Its forests now form the Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary in Panchmahal district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
