Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies
Origins
Seeking oil and raw materials, Japan invaded the Dutch East Indies from January 1942. After the Battle of the Java Sea, the Dutch forces surrendered at Kalijati on 8 March 1942. The colony was divided between the Japanese 16th Army on Java, the 25th Army on Sumatra and the navy in the eastern islands.
Rule and society
The Japanese interned Dutch civilians, banned the Dutch language and renamed Batavia Jakarta. They co-opted nationalist leaders such as Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta, created mass organisations and the PETA volunteer army, but also requisitioned rice and conscripted hundreds of thousands of romusha labourers, causing famine and great loss of life.
Decline and legacy
As defeat neared, Japan allowed a committee to prepare independence, and Sukarno set out the Pancasila principles in June 1945. Two days after Japan surrendered, Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed the independence of Indonesia on 17 August 1945.
