Jasrota State

1400 CE – 1815 CE (approx.) · capital Jasrota

A minor Rajput hill state near Kathua, one of the small principalities absorbed by the Dogra rulers of Jammu in the early 19th century.

Origins

Jasrota was ruled by the Jasrotia Rajputs, a branch related to the ruling family of Jammu. Tradition dates the state to around 1400, but its early history is poorly recorded.

Rule and society

A small state between the Ravi and the Ujh in the lower hills, Jasrota was overshadowed by its neighbours Jammu and Basohli. Little is known of its internal history.

Decline and legacy

In the early 19th century Jasrota was absorbed by the Dogras under the Sikh Empire, and it became part of Jammu and Kashmir (princely state) in 1846. The area is now in Kathua district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
