Jhalawar State

1838 CE – 1948 CE · capital Jhalrapatan

A Rajput state carved out of Kota in 1838 for the heirs of the regent Zalim Singh Jhala, ruled from Jhalrapatan.

Origins

Zalim Singh Jhala was the powerful regent of Kota in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and his descendants held the real power there. To end the rivalry between them and the Kota ruler, the British in 1838 created a separate state from part of Kota for his grandson Madan Singh.

Rule and society

Jhalawar was a 13-gun salute state of the Rajputana Agency, ruled by a Jhala Rajput Maharaj Rana. Its capital lay beside the old temple town of Jhalrapatan. Bhawani Singh (ruled 1899–1929) was known for his learning and interest in education, and later rulers continued to build schools and libraries.

Decline and legacy

Jhalawar acceded to India and in 1948 was merged into the United State of Rajasthan; it is now a district of Rajasthan.
