Kachchhapaghata dynasty
Origins
The Kachchhapaghatas emerged in the 10th century in the region of Gwalior, Narwar and Dubkund in northern Madhya Pradesh, probably as feudatories of the Gurjara-Pratihara or the Chandela dynasty. According to a Gwalior inscription, Vajradaman took the fort of Gopadri, Gwalior, from the Pratiharas around 977.
Rule and society
Several branches of the family ruled from Gwalior, Narwar and Dubkund. They were often vassals of the Chandelas and fought the Paramara dynasty; Kirttiraja is said to have defeated an army from Malwa. Mahipala completed the great Sas-Bahu temple at Gwalior fort in 1093, and the Dubkund branch built Jain temples, showing patronage of both faiths.
Decline and legacy
In the 12th century the Kachchhapaghatas lost Gwalior to a Pratihara family, and the region was later taken by Iltutmish of the Delhi Sultanate in 1232. Later Kachhwaha Rajputs of Amber claimed descent from them.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
