Kingdom of Gera

1835 CE – 1887 CE (approx.) · capital Chala

The southernmost Gibe Oromo kingdom, remembered for holding the Italian explorers Cecchi and Chiarini captive in 1879 to 1880.

Origins

Gera emerged as a monarchy around 1835 in the forested highlands south of the Gibe, bordering the Kingdom of Kaffa. Like the other Gibe states it was formed when Oromo settlers adopted hereditary kingship and settled government.

Rule and society

Gera's kings ruled from Chala through officials, with an economy of coffee, honey, civet and slaves traded north to the markets of the Kingdom of Jimma. The ruling family adopted Islam. In 1879 the court seized the Italian explorers Antonio Cecchi and Giovanni Chiarini, who was held there until his death; Cecchi was freed in 1880 after Ethiopian intervention.

Decline and legacy

In 1887 Gera was conquered by the forces of Menelik II and annexed to the Ethiopian Empire.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
