Kingdom of Moylurg
Origins
Magh Luirg was the territory of a branch of the Sil Muiredaig, the ruling kindred of Connacht. In the 12th century the MacDermot family, descended from Diarmait mac Taidg, emerged as its rulers and as marshals of the O'Connor kings of Connacht.
Rule and society
The MacDermots ruled from the Rock of Lough Ce, an island fortress on Lough Key, and patronised the abbey of Boyle and the learned families who compiled the Annals of Loch Ce. Their lordship was based on cattle, clients and armed retainers, and they served as kingmakers in Connacht politics.
Decline and legacy
The Composition of Connacht in 1585 brought the lordship under English land law. The MacDermots kept part of their lands and their title, the MacDermot, Prince of Coolavin, has been recognised into modern times.
