Kingdom of Rheged

500 CE – 638 CE (approx.)

A British kingdom of the 'Old North' around the Solway, celebrated in Welsh poetry for King Urien and his battles against the Angles.

Origins

Rheged emerged in the 6th century among the Brittonic kingdoms of northern Britain. Its location is uncertain, but scholars usually place it around Carlisle, Cumbria and Galloway. Its fame rests on poems attributed to Taliesin praising Urien Rheged, and on the Historia Brittonum.

Rule and society

Urien is remembered as a leader of a coalition of British kings that besieged the Angles of Bernicia on Lindisfarne in the late 6th century, before he was murdered by a rival. Welsh tradition remembers the court as a centre of bardic patronage. Its society and economy are otherwise almost unknown.

Decline and legacy

Rheged seems to have passed peacefully to Northumbria, perhaps through the marriage of Oswiu to Rhiainfellt, a descendant of Urien, around 638. Its memory lived on in Welsh poetry and Arthurian romance, where Urien and his son Owain became famous figures.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
