Kurwai State

1713 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kurwai

A small Muslim-ruled state of central India, founded by an Afghan officer of the Mughals near Vidisha.

Origins

Kurwai was founded in 1713 by Muhammad Diler Khan, an Afghan officer in Mughal service, who received the territory near the Betwa river. His descendants ruled as Nawabs.

Rule and society

The Nawabs ruled a small territory of farming villages, much of it lost to Sindhia and the Marathas in the 18th century. Under British paramountcy Kurwai was a minor state in the Bhopal Agency. Few further details are widely recorded.

Decline and legacy

Kurwai joined Madhya Bharat in 1948 and Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The town lies in Vidisha district.
