Lakhtar State

1604 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Lakhtar

A Jhala Rajput state of the Jhalawad district of northern Kathiawar, one of several branches of the Jhala clan.

Origins

Lakhtar was founded in 1604 by a cadet of the Jhala house of Halvad, the line that also ruled Dhrangadhra State. Its seat was the small fortified town of Lakhtar, earlier known as Thana Lakhtar.

Rule and society

The Thakor ruled a dry territory of cotton and grain villages, paying tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda and, after 1807, coming under British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency. It was a nine-gun salute state. Few further details of its rulers are widely recorded.

Decline and legacy

Lakhtar merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in present Surendranagar district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
