Maihar State

1778 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Maihar

A Kachhwaha Rajput state of Baghelkhand, home of the Sharda Devi hill temple and of the Maihar school of Hindustani music.

Origins

The ruling family of Maihar were Kachhwaha Rajputs who had served the Bundela rulers of Panna and received lands in the area. Around 1778 they established Maihar as their own principality, and the British confirmed it by sanad in the early 19th century.

Rule and society

Maihar was a 9-gun salute state of the Baghelkhand Agency, ruled by a Raja. The goddess Sharda's temple on Trikuta hill drew pilgrims from across north India. Raja Brijnath Singh made the sarod master Allauddin Khan his court musician, and pupils such as Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan trained there, creating the Maihar gharana.

Decline and legacy

After independence Maihar was merged into Vindhya Pradesh in 1948 and joined Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
