Manavadar State

1733 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Manavadar

A small Babi Pathan state in Kathiawar whose ruler, like his kinsman of Junagadh, tried to join Pakistan in 1947.

Origins

Manavadar was held by a branch of the Babi family, the Pathan dynasty that ruled Junagadh State. It became a separate chiefship in the 18th century and, together with Bantva, formed a small Muslim-ruled holding in western Saurashtra.

Rule and society

The Khan of Manavadar governed a largely Hindu farming population under the Kathiawar Agency and later the Western India States Agency. It was a minor state with no gun salute and little recorded political history.

Decline and legacy

In 1947 the Khan, Ghulam Moinuddin Khanji, acceded to Pakistan along with Junagadh. India took control in October 1947, and in 1948 Manavadar was merged into the United State of Saurashtra; it now lies in Junagadh district of Gujarat.
