Netherlands Antilles

1954 CE – 2010 CE · capital Willemstad

Autonomous country of six Dutch Caribbean islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1954, dissolved into separate parts in 2010.

Origins

The Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, signed on 15 December 1954, turned the colony of Curaçao and Dependencies into the Netherlands Antilles, an equal partner with the Netherlands and Suriname. It comprised Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire off Venezuela, and Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius in the Leewards.

Rule and society

The Antilles had their own parliament, the Staten, and government at Willemstad, while the Netherlands handled defence and foreign affairs. Oil refining on Curaçao and Aruba, offshore finance and tourism sustained the economy. Papiamentu, Dutch and English were spoken. Labour unrest erupted in the Curaçao riots of 30 May 1969, which brought Afro-Curaçaoan politicians to power. Resentment of Curaçao's dominance grew on the smaller islands.

Decline and legacy

Aruba left in 1986 to become a separate country. On 10 October 2010 the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved: Curaçao and Sint Maarten became countries within the kingdom, and Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became special municipalities of the Netherlands.
