Petrocorii

300 BCE – 51 BCE (approx.) · capital Vesunna

Gallic people of the Dordogne whose name lives on in the Périgord and whose town Vesunna became Périgueux.

Origins

The Petrocorii lived in the valleys of the Isle and the Dordogne, in the modern Dordogne. Their name is usually read as the four armies, perhaps a league of four communities. Strabo notes their iron workings.

Rule and society

Little is known of their rulers. Their main oppidum stood at La Curade near Périgueux.

Decline and legacy

They sent five thousand men to relieve Alesia in 52 BCE. Under Rome their capital was Vesunna, a well-preserved town whose temple tower, the Tour de Vésone, still stands. The city became Périgueux, and the medieval County of Périgord kept their name.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
