Ranpur State

1400 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Ranpur

A small Odisha princely state near Khurda, where a popular uprising in 1939 led to the killing of the British Political Agent.

Origins

Ranpur's ruling family claimed very ancient descent, and tradition dates the state to around 1400. Its early history is not reliably documented.

Rule and society

Ranpur was a hilly, wooded state south-west of Cuttack, tributary first to the kings of Khurda and later, from 1803, to the British as one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals. In January 1939, during agitation by the Praja Mandal against the Raja's exactions, a crowd killed the Political Agent, Major R. L. Bazalgette; the rising was put down and leaders were hanged.

Decline and legacy

Ranpur merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now in Nayagarh district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
