Republic of Zamboanga
Origins
Zamboanga was the main Spanish stronghold in Mindanao. In 1899, as Spain prepared to withdraw after ceding the islands, local revolutionaries under General Vicente Alvarez fought the garrison, and after the Spanish departure in May they proclaimed a republic with Alvarez as president.
Rule and society
The republic governed the Christian, Chavacano-speaking town and its surroundings, but it was divided by rivalries between revolutionary factions and with neighbouring Muslim datus, who distrusted a Christian-led government. Alvarez was ousted, and Isidoro Midel led the government that negotiated with the Americans.
Decline and legacy
Midel surrendered Zamboanga to American forces in November 1899. A local government using the republic's name survived under American supervision until 1903, when Zamboanga became the capital of the new Moro Province.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
