Sayla State

1751 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sayla

A small Jhala Rajput state of the Jhalawad district of Kathiawar, founded in the mid-18th century.

Origins

Sayla was established around 1751 by a member of the Jhala Rajput clan, kinsmen of the rulers of Dhrangadhra State and Limbdi, who took the town and set up his own chiefship.

Rule and society

The Thakor governed a small dry-farming territory within the Kathiawar Agency. The town is known as a Hindu pilgrimage place connected with the saint Lalji Maharaj. Little else is recorded of its political history.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Sayla was merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948; it is now a town in Surendranagar district of Gujarat.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
