Segovellauni

300 BCE – 121 BCE (approx.) · capital Valentia

Small Gallic people of the middle Rhône valley around Valence, absorbed into Rome's first province in Gaul.

Origins

Known only from Pliny and Ptolemy, the Segovellauni lived on the left bank of the Rhône around modern Valence, between the Allobroges to the north and the Cavares to the south. They may have been dependents of the Allobroges or the Cavares.

Rule and society

Nothing is recorded of their rulers or society beyond their position on the Rhône corridor, the main route between the Mediterranean and central Gaul.

Decline and legacy

Their land passed under Roman control after the victories over the Allobroges and Arverni in 121 BCE. The Roman colony of Valentia (Valence) was founded in their territory, probably under Caesar or Augustus.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
