Valence is a city in south-eastern France, on the left bank of the Rhône, and the capital of the Drôme department. Founded as the Roman colony of Valentia in the territory of the Segovellauni, it became a bishopric and the centre of the Valentinois, held by the counts of the Poitiers family. Pope Pius VI died there in exile in 1799.
