Taraon State

1812 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Taraon

One of the Chaube jagirs of Bundelkhand, held by a branch of the Brahmin family that once governed the fort of Kalinjar.

Origins

The Chaubes were Brahmin governors of the great fortress of Kalinjar under the Bundela rulers of Panna. When the British took Kalinjar in 1812, they gave the family members small jagirs, including Taraon, in return for its surrender.

Rule and society

Taraon was a minor holding of a few villages under the Bundelkhand Agency, ruled by a Chaube chief. Little else is recorded.

Decline and legacy

After independence Taraon was merged into Vindhya Pradesh with the other Bundelkhand states and absorbed by 1950.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
