Vadia State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Vadia

A small Kathi state in southern Kathiawar, one of the hereditary estates of the clan that gave the peninsula its name.

Origins

Vadia was held by a branch of Kathi chiefs, who settled in Kathiawar from the later medieval period. The estate near Amreli took shape as a separate holding by around 1600.

Rule and society

The Darbar ruled a small territory of farming villages, paying tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda and to Junagadh. After 1807 it came under British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency. Few details of its rulers are widely recorded.

Decline and legacy

Vadia merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in present Amreli district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
