Vanod State

1700 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Vanod

A small estate of the Jhalawad country of northern Kathiawar, on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch.

Origins

Vanod was a small holding near the Little Rann of Kutch in the Jhalawad region of Kathiawar, held by a local chiefly family from around 1700. Its founding is known mainly from local tradition.

Rule and society

The ruler governed a few dry villages and, after 1807, came under British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency. Little else is recorded.

Decline and legacy

Vanod merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in Surendranagar district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
