Virpur State
Origins
Virpur, also called Virpur-Kherdi, was held by a branch of Jadeja Rajputs related to the ruling houses of Nawanagar and Gondal. It emerged as a separate holding around 1600.
Rule and society
The Thakor ruled a small agrarian territory, paying tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda and Junagadh before British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency after 1807. In the 19th century the town became the home of the saint Jalaram, whose free kitchen drew devotees from across Gujarat.
Decline and legacy
Virpur merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. The Jalaram temple in Rajkot district keeps the town well known.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
