1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre
The 1989 Tiananmen Square protests were student-led demonstrations in Beijing and other Chinese cities from April to June 1989, calling for political reform, freedom of the press and an end to corruption. The government declared martial law, and on the night of 3–4 June the army cleared Tiananmen Square and the surrounding streets, killing hundreds and possibly thousands of people.
